Then the 1973 oil embargo hit, fuel mileage became the number-one issue, and the steam car projects of the time were ´Dead On Arrival´.

At the bottom of the screen, a calculation of the vehicle´s gas mileage at the current instant is displayed; it ranges from about 7 MPG (when I floored the accelerator from a stop) to 99 MPG (on any flat or downhill road).

This index is essentially the opposite of the octane rating, where a high octane fuel resists spontaneous ignition, and therefore does not tend to ´knock.´ The cetane number of 100 was arbitrarily assigned to ´cetane´ or n-hexadecane, a straight-chain aliphatic chemical compound that burns very well, in the single-cylinder test diesel engine.

Other than the obvious difference in the fuel requirement, the TDI is a remarkable little engine.

In D-4 direct injection, fuel and air is injected directly into the cylinder, instead of mixing it in the intake port which is how conventional fuel injection works.
